The score is based on how your answer compared with what people subsequently said the correct answer was, weighted by how many other people predicted the same thing.
In other words, the maximum score would be received if you were only person to give the answer that everyone said after the fact was correct. If your answer was one that more than half the people said turned out to be incorrect, you will have had points taken off. This means that you may potentially have ended up with a negative score.
